What is Alpha?
More than fifteen million people all over the world have completed the Alpha course during the last fifteen years in churches, homes, schools, universities and prisons. Alpha is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed, non-threatening setting over nine thought-provoking weekly sessions, with a "Getaway" day included. It is low-key, friendly and fun - and is supported by all the main Christian denominations. An Alpha course will be running at Parkwood Gospel Temple (E.C. Row and Central Ave). Why not take this opportunity to explore the meaning of life?
|
Who is Alpha for?
Everyone is welcome on an Alpha course and people attend for a wide variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any point to life; others are concerned about what happens after death. Still others may have attended church on and off all their lives but felt they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. People come from many different backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints - but all come with the same objective: to establish whether Jesus Christ has any real relevance for their lives.

A Typical Evening at Alpha
At Parkwood, the Alpha course runs on Tuesdays from 6 to 8:15 PM. Here's a typical timetable for an evening session of Alpha.
|
|
1 hour Dinner Almost all evening courses begin with a meal of some kind, ranging from a full supper to a light snack. Guests usually eat with other members of their own 'group' of around 8-12 people.
5 - 7 min Break
45 min Talk (video) The main talk of the evening addresses a key issue relating to the Christian faith. We use a video of speaker Nicky Gumbel (founder of Alpha) giving the talk. 30 min Small Groups Many guests speak of how they find the small group sessions to be the most valuable and rewarding times of the whole Alpha course. The sessions are an opportunity to ask questions, express opinions and to discuss the topic of the evening. They also provide an opportunity to make friends and to bounce ideas around in a relaxed and non-threatening environment.
Ends The course ends at 8:15 PM, although guests are free to stay and chat if they would like.

What about my Kids?
Our adult sessions are Baby/Child free zone. Alpha Kids is available from 6 to 8:15 PM on Tuesday nights for children from infant to grade 5.
